Basic overview

• A Holter Monitor is a small device that monitors the electrical activity of your heart over a 24 or 48 hour period.

Indications for the test

• Investigation of palpitations, presyncope (near black-outs) or syncope (complete black-outs)
• Assessment for abnormal heart rhythms is patients with an abnormal heart i.e. heart failure, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (thick heart muscle)

What to expect

• Electrodes (stickers) will be placed on the outside of your chest. They are then connected to a small recording device that can fit on your belt or in your pocket.
• You will then take the device home and go about your day to day activities.
• You will be given an alert button to press if you experience symptoms.
• Upon returning the device at the end of the recording period, the information will be downloaded and analysed by a cardiac nurse and a Cardiologist.
