Basic overview

• This is a test that involves the insertion of a small device called a loop recorder under the skin on the chest.
• This device records the heart rhythm and stores information about heart rates that are too fast or too slow. Its battery can last 2-3 years.

Indications for the test

• Palpitations or black-outs (syncope) that is suspected to be due to an electrical disorder of the heart (arrhythmia), that are sporadic or not captured on a standard 24-hr recording (Holter monitor)

What to expect

• You will be guided through the procedure on the day, including the risks (<1:1000 chance of a serious complication)
• Your doctor will numb the a small patch of skin on the left side of the chest (close to the sternum) with local anaesthetic.
• The procedure will take about 10 minutes.
• Once finished a small dressing will be applied to the area.
