An echocardiogram is a test that uses ultrasound to assesses the heart size, heart function, and valve function.
Indications for the test
Evaluation of a heart murmur (this is done primarily to assess for the presence of a ‘valve problem’ or infrequently a ‘hole in the heart’)
Assessment of heart function in patients with symptoms of breathlessness, recurrent palpitations, or other predisposing conditions (such as high blood pressure)
What to expect
You will be asked to lie on a bed, whilst an ultrasound probe is moved over various locations on your chest and upper abdomen.
The test is not invasive and takes 30-45 mins to complete.
