Transthoracic echocardiogram

Basic overview

  • An echocardiogram is a test that uses ultrasound to assesses the heart size, heart function, and valve function.

Indications for the test

  • Evaluation of a heart murmur (this is done primarily to assess for the presence of a ‘valve problem’ or infrequently a ‘hole in the heart’)
  • Assessment of heart function in patients with symptoms of breathlessness, recurrent palpitations, or other predisposing conditions (such as high blood pressure)

What to expect

  • You will be asked to lie on a bed, whilst an ultrasound probe is moved over various locations on your chest and upper abdomen.
  • The test is not invasive and takes 30-45 mins to complete.
